What is the CDS Exam?

• INA: Indian Naval Academy (Ezhimala) – Permanent Commission

CDS Notification & Important Timelines

Academy-Wise Eligibility Criteria

Age Limit & Marital Status

The age bracket for defence entries is strictly bounded with no relaxation for any category. Specifically, the critical factor is your exact age on the first day of the course commencement year.

• CDS IMA Age Limit: 19 to 24 years (Unmarried males only).
• CDS INA Age Limit: 19 to 24 years (Unmarried males only).
• CDS AFA Age Limit: 20 to 24 years. However, the upper age limit is relaxable up to 26 years only for candidates possessing a valid Commercial Pilot License (CPL) issued by DGCA.
• CDS OTA Age Limit: 19 to 25 years. Notably, this is the only academy open to both unmarried men and women (including eligible widows/divorcees who have not remarried).

Educational Requirements

Different technical wings demand specific educational backgrounds. For instance, engineering skills are mandatory for the Navy, while arts or commerce graduates can easily opt for the Army.

Note for Final Year Students: If you are in your final semester/year of graduation, you can provisionally apply for the exam. However, this is provided you do not have any active backlogs and can submit proof of passing your degree by the date specified in the official notification PDF.

Every section follows an objective, multiple-choice testing pattern held offline via pen-and-paper mode (OMR sheets). Furthermore, each paper has a time window of exactly 2 hours. There is also a strict negative marking penalty where 1/3rd of the marks allocated to that question will be deducted for every incorrect response.

1. English Language for all Candidates (120 Qs | 100 Marks)

• Grammar & Syntax: Spotting errors, parts of speech identification, and syntax rules.
• Vocabulary: Synonyms, antonyms, idioms, phrases, and cloze tests.
• Comprehension & Logic: Reading passages, sentence ordering, and para-jumbles.

2. General Knowledge for all Candidates (120 Qs | 100 Marks)

• Current Affairs: National/international news, sports, awards, space, and military exercises.
• General Science: 10th-grade level Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
• Social Sciences: Modern Indian History (Freedom Struggle), Ancient/Medieval dynasties, Geography (maps, rivers, climate), Indian Polity (Constitution, Rights), and Basic Economics.

3. Mathematics Paper for IMA, INA & AFA (100 Qs | 100 Marks)

• Arithmetic: Number systems, HCF/LCM, percentages, profit/loss, interest, ratios, and time/speed/distance.
• Algebra & Trigonometry: Equations (linear/quadratic), basic operations, set theory, trigonometric ratios, and heights/distances.
• Geometry & Mensuration: Properties of lines, angles, triangles, and circles; area/perimeter of 2D shapes; volume/surface area of 3D solids.
• Statistics: Data collection, histograms, pie charts, and mean/median/mode.

Note: For Air Force Academy (AFA) candidate must also pass the CPSS (Computerised Pilot Selection System) to test cognitive reflexes and hand-eye coordination for flying.

First step: One-Time Registration (OTR)

1. Go to the official UPSC registration link via upsconline.nic.in.
2. Fill in your name, gender, date of birth, father’s/mother’s identity records, active mobile number, and your email address.
3. Verify your registration using the OTP codes sent to your phone and email. Consequently, you will receive your unique OTR ID.

Second step: Completing the Application

1. Log in to the portal using your OTR credentials and navigate to the “Latest Notifications” segment.
2. Select the active Combined Defence Services Examination link.
